Liverpool Joins The Chase For Torres
Thursday, March 02, 2006
Liverpool are looking to steal Atletico Madrid star, Fernando Torres from under the noses of North London rivals, Arsenal and Sp*rs.
Sp*rs have a bid for the Spanish player during the January transfer window and Arsenal recently joined in the chase. Wheather or not the bid is to replace Henry or to convince Henry, nobody can really tell...with AW being very quiet regarding contract talks with Henry.
Rafael Benitez is likely to use his Spanish connections to lure Torres to Anfield, but Arsene Wenger has been investing a lot on Spanish youngsters, Jose Antonio Reyes and Cesc Fabregas are examples of Spanish players who have found their way to Highbury. Rafa will attempt to bring Torres to Liverpool to solve their current striker's crisis, with another Spanish striker, incidently also named Fernando, Morientes has been lacking the goals, along with 14million pound signing Cisse who has been tipped to leave the club at the end of this campaign.
Torres is likely to cost the club that buys him a lot of money...i mean serious cash! And the only club I see spending that kind of money is Chelsea (who will probably be linked with him sooner or later) and Arsenal, wheather or not Henry will have to be sold to get the cash is another topic all together.
Arsenal revealed in late 2005 that they have set aside 80million pounds for possible transfers. Personally, I'm very sceptical of big money purchases, I especially dont want us to do a Leeds Utd.
